Need A Brain Upgrade? Scientists Think They Know How

The human brain is a wonderful thing to taste er, test. That’s why a new paper explores the possibilities of improving memory by manipulating a specific enzyme. Why is this important? For starters, it could potentially open a new frontier of brain-specific medication.

But we’re getting way ahead of ourselves here. The highly technical research paper can be downloaded at this location; it discusses the kinase M enzyme that’s responsible for preserving our memory. The degree of kinase in our brains determines how much data we keep in the soft tissue hard drive within our skulls.

So far, testing has only involved rats and the results are encouraging–the rats showed signs that their short-term memories were extended thanks to kinase manipulation. This indicates kinase can be altered and the effects can influence our thinking, which is good because that means extra brain performance.

If you’re wondering when memory enhancing drugs developed from this research hits the market, we don’t know and neither does the medical community. Consider this little post a first glimpse into an exciting new frontier.
